I’ve long been a fan of Angela Missoni’s artistic talent. So when I was invited to have lunch with the design guru herself earlier this week, I jumped at the chance to pick the brains of arguably one of the most talented Creative Directors on the scene.

For those who don’t know, Missoni is an Italian fashion house famous worldwide for its stunning knitwear and playful patterns. In town to host an exclusive preview of the Missoni Pre-Fall 2012 collection at Boutique 1, myself and a select group of media were invited to Salmontini in Mall of the Emirates to grab a bite with Angela before the event, where we talked about everything from fashion and to holiday homes in Lake Como and her gorgeous daughter Margherita’s upcoming nuptials (she’s set to marry a long-term friend of the family next month).

When it comes to personalities, they don’t get more welcoming than Angela Missoni. Bubbly, bright and super-friendly, she oozes a familiarity I suspect you won’t find with many world-class designers and she was an absolute pleasure to chat to. As for the collection, think everything from over-sized cardigans to wide jackets and skirts in a delectable colour palette of grey, purple and earth tones. I’ll definitely be saving up for a little piece of my own Missoni from this stunning collection.

The lighter side of luxury http://blog.conciergedubai.com/uncategorized/the-lighter-side-of-luxury/ http://blog.conciergedubai.com/uncategorized/the-lighter-side-of-luxury/#comments Thu, 09 Feb 2012 07:17:35 +0000 admin http://blog.conciergedubai.com/?p=465 By Scott Birch

Mon Dupont

Mon Dupont by Karl Lagerfeld

On a glorious day in Dubai, out on the terrace of The One & Only Royal Mirage, ladies are lunching and the affluent are enjoying afternoon tea. Nothing unusual there. Then at another table, a rather dashing French gentleman is holding court surrounded by enough ladies to make up a netball team. Again, nothing so unusual there. But one thing did seem amiss.

Unless I was very much mistaken, all of the eight were smoking – the gentleman toking on a Clint Eastwood-esque cigarillo, the ladies daintily pulling on Gauloise (or so I would like to think). It was exactly as I had expected. After all, the contingent were in Dubai with the luxury Parisian brand ST Dupont, who specialise in, amongst other things, lighters.

ST Dupont has been around since 1872. One hundred and forty years later, and after a few false starts, the brand is now focused on four main pillars which it calls the Art of Living – writing instruments (that’s pens to you and me), lighters, leather goods and accessories.

Alain Crevet, president of ST Dupont

Alain Crevet, president of ST Dupont

Alain Crevet is the cigar-smoking, rock guitar-playing president who has helped to turn ST Dupont around after some lean years and an ill-fated departure into men’s ready-to-wear.

Going back to basics, Alain has brought the brand back to life and refocused attention on its strengths. And the brand itself is strong, particularly in the Middle East, where it has been operating for 60 years.

Alain and his netball team are here to showcase the latest products, aimed squarely at the female market and with a celebrity designer par excellence behind them. Karl Lagerfeld, the genius currently behind Chanel and Fendi, has created luxe lighters with a distinctly feminine feel (they look like lipsticks) and unique pens in the shape of his trademark fan.

Recently launched in Europe, this is the Middle East debut of the Mon Dupont range before Alain heads to Asia with his Lagerfeld loot.

An engaging, affable and refreshingly ‘cool’ president, Alain waxes about the wonderful lighters that are the ST Dupont signature and also the reintroduction of their bespoke luggage factory after a 65-year hiatus.

Interestingly, the last piece of the small production line in 1947 was a wedding gift for the future Queen Elizabeth II of England. The first piece produced at the new factory was an identical wedding gift for Prince William and Kate Middleton last year, at the request of President Sarkozy. Happy coincidence.

Steeped in history, with a clear focus and some handsome luxury items, expect to be hearing more about ST Dupont, especially in the pages of Concierge magazine.

WORLD EXCLUSIVE – Concierge first to see new watches http://blog.conciergedubai.com/post/world-exclusive-concierge-first-to-see-new-luxury-watches/ http://blog.conciergedubai.com/post/world-exclusive-concierge-first-to-see-new-luxury-watches/#comments Wed, 14 Sep 2011 07:19:53 +0000 admin http://blog.conciergedubai.com/post/world-exclusive-concierge-first-to-see-new-luxury-watches/ Just another day in Dubai. You head onto a man-made island in the shape of a Palm Tree in your 4X4. Drive for miles to the top of ‘the tree in the sea’ and turn left at the impressive Atlantis, The Palm hotel, and pull up at the opulent Jumeirah Zabeel Saray.

You valet park your car and walk across the hot marble before immersing yourself in the air-conditioned glory of the luxe lobby. Another day, another world-class, five-star hotel to tick off the ‘been there’ list.

But I’m not here to enjoy the Talise spa or explore the fine dining options or uber-cool bars (sadly). I’m here to look at some watches. But not just any old watches.

I’m meeting the CEO of luxury Swiss brand Quinting – the only brand in the world to make transparent timepieces. Transparent? Yes. Ever since Cartier created his famous Mystery watch in 1913, watchmakers have been trying to perfect see-through wristwatch.

It took them 7 years, but the first Quinting masterpiece was unveiled in 1999.

Since then, the brand has adorned the wrists of world leaders like Bill Clinton, Vladimir Putin and Kofi Annan, as well as many Swiss presidents. French actor Gerard Depardieu is also a devotee, and no doubt puts the watch through more rigorous and unusual challenges…

So, that’s your 30-second cheat sheet on Quinting.

I met with the CEO Pascal Berclaz in the Levant (high jewellery and watches) store in Jumeirah Zabeel Saray. Pascal is a friendly and interesting man, and after discussing the brand’s history and forward trajectory, the important of the UAE market, the rise of China and brilliant counterfeits, Pascal delves into his bag and pulls out images of a brand new range that they are launching. Today. And I am the first to see them. They are even right here in the store.

So please allow me to introduce the Quinting Art Collection. Transparent watches with hand-painted enamel faces, with uniqueness as a main attraction.

The Moonlight

The Moonlight

The Moonlight is another first for Quinting – the only moon phase watch to have the moon revolving around the earth, accurately showing its phases. As an extra touch, a comet flies around the planet every hour. Want more? The limited edition of 360 pieces represents the 360 degrees of the earth, and each piece has a different view of the planet from space, painted by hand.

Glowing Polo

Glowing Polo

We also got our hands on the Glowing Polo watch, sure to be a hit in equestrian circles. Why glowing? The rider and horse are in a special phosphorescent paint, meaning it glows in the dark.

The Cherry Blossom

The Cherry Blossom

The Koi Fish

The Koi Fish

Completing the set are The Cherry Blossom and The Koi Fish – the latter unashamedly aimed at the Far East market.

More on Quinting and their new watches in a future issue of Concierge magazine…

World’s most expensive car heading to UAE? http://blog.conciergedubai.com/uncategorized/worlds-most-expensive-car-heading-to-uae/ http://blog.conciergedubai.com/uncategorized/worlds-most-expensive-car-heading-to-uae/#comments Mon, 04 Jul 2011 07:06:44 +0000 admin http://blog.conciergedubai.com/?p=94 As if there aren’t enough top-of-the-range, exclusive sports cars on the UAE’s roads today, it seems the world’s most expensive car, a Bugatti L’Or Blanc, is now headed for Abu Dhabi. Setting the owner back a cool US$2.4 million (AED8.8 million), the super-sleek vehicle features porcelain wheel badges and even a caviar tray.

While it has a white exterior with royal blue lines, little else is known about the extravagant car. We’ll be keeping our eyes peeled in the coming months in the hope that we might glimpse the streamlined machine. Watch this space…
