The winners of the tenth annual Concierge Competition have been announced by the Department of Tourism, Commerce and Marketing (DTCM), during an awards ceremony on November 15 at the Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club.

Eugene Ismael from the Burj Al Arab took home the Special Jury Award and the Outstanding Knowledge & Culture Award, while Ali Manauwar from The Palace – The Old Town was honoured for his Outstanding Knowledge of Attractions & Events. First Class Customer Care was scooped by Deodati Martinez from the Mina A`Salam, while the much-coveted Concierge of the Year 2011 Award went to Farrukh Akhmedov, also from the Mina A`Salam. Farrukh, who was rewarded with AED20,000 in prize money, will be jetting off to London to take part in the UK-based Concierge of the Year Competition in 2012.

The Concierge Team of the Year Award went to Mina A`Salam and the other winners included Anita Lottero from The Ritz-Carlton Dubai who bagged the Outstanding Knowledge of Shopping in Dubai Award and Ashwin Fernandez who was named Best Head Concierge.

The Concierge Competition, which is organised by DTCM and sponsored by BurJuman, Big Bus Tour and Concierge Magazine, is an annual contest designed to develop the hotel and hospitality services, while also honouring key players in the concierge world.

Best restaurants with views in Dubai

We received this question yesterday from a reader in the UK:

I am coming out to Dubai next week, and I was wondering if you could please recommend any restaurants/bars which I can bring my 18 year old brother to, which also have good views across Dubai.

And this was our answer. If anyone has any other great suggestions, please post a comment here… Thanks.

Hi, one good bet would be the various cafes and restaurants at The Dubai Mall in the evening, as these have views over the Dubai Fountain.

Also worth trying are the dozens of bars and restaurants at Madinat Jumeirah, which offers a wide choice and great views of the Burj Al Arab etc.

If it’s too hot to be outside, you can try The Observatory at Dubai Marriott in the Marina. This is on a high floor and offers panoramic views of the marina, Palm, etc.

Another good option is Barasti at Le Meridien Mina Seyahi – a casual beach bar very popular with British expats.

Depending on your tastes and location, The Irish Village in Garhoud near the airport is also something of an institution and offers Dubai’s only real beer garden. Just bear in mind it will still be warm and humid even at night.

If you have more details of your preferences or tastes, I’m sure we can give you some more information. I would also suggest your brother carries some ID.

Dubai Creek in the old part of town is more atmospheric and there are various ways to experience that too.

    Have a great trip.
